Day Five
Today we stretched our lens of "Seattle art" all the way to Tacoma, admiring art from the greater Puget Sound. We began our day with a debrief at Anthem Coffee and Tea, a delightful local café and music hot spot. The café's décor was a great example of how repurposed items can be used as art. Several antique doors made light and ceiling fixtures, reclaimed wood made the coffee bar, and the shelves and walls were dressed up with old glass bottles and mason jars. Fully caffeinated, we crossed the pedestrian bridge to the Museum of Glass where we saw Erich Woll, a visiting artist, working on a piece for the museum in the Hot Shop. In a tour from our docent, we learned all about the glass as a medium for art, as well as period pieces. We especially enjoyed the "Look! See? The Colors and Letters of Jen Elek and Jeremy Bert" exhibit which provided us with plenty of hands-on experimentation. We stopped at Choripan by Asado, the museum café, for a delightful Argentinian inspired lunch. Our fare included artisan grilled cheese, empanadas, and butternut squash soup, all artfully plated and equally as satisfying. After lunch, we crossed back over to the Tacoma Art Museum. We enjoyed self-guided tours through the Agnes Martin, Optic Nerve, and Punch of Color exhibits. It was a wonderful day to wrap up a truly amazing week with a great group of kids.
