We began the day with a coffee tasting, compliments of the Bear Creek Starbucks. Paired with croissants, we tasted the difference between the Pike's Place blend and the Sulawesi, which is a single origin roast, the latter being the sure favorite. Fully caffeinated, we began our Tom's shoes Style Your Sole event with a demonstration by local professional artist, Dutch. Dutch taught the students how to plan their canvases (in this case, Tom's canvas shoes) and how to "set" their designs with a hand held heater. After a couple hours of painting, decorating, and glittering Tom's shoes, Karla, of the Bellevue Teavana, arrived to do a tea tasting. We sampled white, herbal, green, and black teas, learning which temperatures are best for making tea (turns out, boiling burns tea leaves!) and which varietals have the most caffeine. We ended the day with a photography lesson and demonstration from local professional photographer Jenny Wohrle. Jenny taught the students all about lighting, angles, height, the rule of thirds, and many other photography techniques. We also learned tips for digital/phone photography such as where to place the yellow focus box to achieve the best light. It was a great first day of Project Week 2016!
